Using Lighting Models and Perspective to Layer Panel Labels
Keywords: Strip labels, 3-D layering, graphics panels
Abstract: This presentation addresses a task in layering the information in multi-panel displays. We make the basic information laying assumption that panel labels should not relegate panel graphics to the background. This often happens with color-filled panel strip labels. We address the challenge of using lighting models and perspective to bring the graphics panels into the foreground. Attending to such layering details does not fundamentally alter the statistical content. However, a 3-D appearance gives readers the impression of value added. This can make good graphics more competitive in a world where form often wins over substance.
The new designs are perhaps controversial. Our goal is to convince the human visual system about the layering. We have used multiple viewpoint approximations rather than a single realistic projection with a realistic lighting model. A drawback is that the designs take up a small amount of extra space are not yet as general and automated as Trellis strip labels. Nonetheless, the apparent value added should make the designs worth serious consideration.
