An Intelligent Distributed Environment for Adaptive Learning
E. James Harner

Adaptive and intelligent Web-based learning environments offer significant opportunities to understand human learning and to enhance learner success. To this end, educators and scientists need to design and build learning environments that allow the exploration of the relationship between learning theory and intelligent learning systems. This talk describes the design of IDEAL and shows how IDEAL can be implemented to teach statistics using a multi-tier distributed architecture. We hypothesize that statistical problem solving and concept learning will be improved by adapting learning strategies to individual students and by providing learner feedback.

Visualizing Statistics: An Interactive Electronic Statistics Text
R. Todd Ogden

Visualizing Statistics is a modern alternative to the traditional linear (paper) textbook. This book is written completely in HTML format, with appropriate hyperlinks both within and between chapters. The biggest advantage of an electronic textbook is that it can be interactive. Throughout the text, interactive Java applets help students learn new concepts and practice learned concepts. Another Java applet serves as the analysis package for the course.

Developments in Web- Based Computing
Balasubramanian Narasimhan

The last year has seen dramatic developments in the technology of web-based computing. I'll focus on developments in the Java front and the XML front, all of which will impact how we deliver course-content over the web. Briefly put, Java makes portable computing possible and XML allows us to have portable data. Newer versions of browsers allow us to exploit these technologies and will be XML-aware; in fact Microsoft IE 5.0 is already so. At Stanford, we are beginning to use these new tools in delivering applets and class projects over the Web. I will debut some new applets and provide a clear specification of the hardware and software set up needed.
