Master of Science In Applied Probability and
Statistics
Welcome to the Northern Illinois University - Division of Statistics web page designed to give you a breif overview of our master's program, we are glad to see that we have piqued your interest in our programs. Feel free to browse through our web pages for additional information about our programs, courses, faculty and their interest, and Northern Illinois University. The Division of Statistics offers a Masters of Science program in applied probability and statistics. It is designed to develop students' abilities necessary for immediate employment as statisticians and/or applied probabilists, and prepare them for more advanced study. Our master's degree program is unique for its emphasis on applied statistics and probability courses. At Northern, the statistics emphasis at the Ph.D. level is an option within the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The qualifying exams for this emphasis are in probability and mathematical statistics, applied statistics, and real analysis. At the time of admission each student is expected to have completed a standard three-course sequence in calculus and a course in elementary linear algebra. Courses equivalent to CSCI 230 and one from STAT 470 and STAT 473 must also have been completed. Any deficiencies should be removed at the beginning of the student’s program. A limited number of graduate teaching assistantships are available on a competitive basis. Apply early for admission and assistantship (international applicants will also be considered for assistantships). Decisions regarding assistantships usually begin in mid-March and are finalized by mid-May.
Thank you for considering statistics at NIU. If you have further questions or would like to discuss your plans, please do not hesitate to write, call, or e-mail our director of graduate and undergraduate studies, Prof. Sanjib Basu.
Degree Requirements
Complete at least
33 semester hours of graduate work, not more than 50 percent of which may be
in courses numbered 400-499. At least
15 semester hours must be in courses offered by the Department of
Mathematical Sciences and numbered 500 or above. Follow a program
of study approved by the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Pass a
comprehensive examination based upon your plan of study. Usually, a student pursuing full-time
graduate study will be required to take the comprehensive examination within
two academic years of admission to the Course
