Modem Connections

STUCK? SEARCH INDEX MAIN

There are two ways of dialing into the NIU network. The simpler one is to use a text-based "terminal emulator" software such as Kermit, ProComm, ZTerm, or similar. It also allows one to transfer files using communications protocols designed specifically for modems (kermit, zmodem).

The second way is much more capable, and essentially connects the home computer to the network, making it a part of the Internet. It is also a bit more complicated to set up.

To decide which one fits your needs, consider your home computer's capabilities. Does it run a graphics-oriented system such as MacOS or Windows, as opposed to DOS? Does it have a comfortable amount of RAM (8 MB or more is good)? Is your modem fast enough (14.4 kbps is the practical minimum)? Do you want to use Netscape?

If the answer to all these questions is "yes", then the fancier method is what you want. Otherwise stick to the old-fashioned terminal emulation. In either case you will need a dialup account from Academic Computing Services. Please read about the procedure for obtaining it.
