Simple Macintosh Dialup Connections

If you've obtained a dialup account from Academic Computing Services, and you are not interested in setting up dialup Internet (PPP) access from home, you can use one of the simple terminal emulators to connect to departmental computers (or other computers on which you have an account).

Locate a copy of a "VT-100 compatible terminal emulator" program; there are several free and shareware packages such as ZTerm available in software archives (e.g. in the Info Mac collection). You could also try using an integrated package such as ClarisWorks.

Set the communications parameters to:

Now tell the terminal program to dial 753 6600. If you don't see an obvious menu or button for doing this, just type ATDT 753 6600 and press Return in the terminal window. When the connection is made, the screen should show the prompt "Username:"; type the name of the account you've obtained from ACS, together with the name of the computer on which it is valid - e.g. tf0hst1@corn.cso.niu.edu. The next prompt should read "Password:", and you should supply the password for that account (you have changed it by now, haven't you?)

If all goes well, you should see the prompt TSERVER> on the screen. You can now connect to the computer where you will be working, e.g. rlogin holmes.math.niu.edu.

When you close the connection your modem should automatically hang up and say NO CARRIER. If it doesn't, hit the "plus" key three times in quick succession (the modem should respond OK), and then type ATH and press Return to hang up.
