About the Staff

Dr. Helen Khoury
Project Co-Director
hkhoury@math.niu.edu
Dr. Khoury is an associate professor of mathematics education at Northern Illinois University, Department of Mathematical Sciences. Her teaching experience extends from the middle school , the high school, and through the university level. Her research interests focus on the development of students' mathematical thinking, and on identifying the reasoning strategies students use as they solve mathematical problems related to, multiplicative concepts such as ratios, proportions, and functions. She has directed and participated in several standards-based in-service teacher enhancement programs at the elementary and middle school levels.

Dr. Diana Steele
Project Co-Director
dsteele@math.niu.edu
Dr. Steele is an assistant professor of mathematics education at Northern Illinois University, Department of Mathematical Sciences. She taught at the elementary and secondary levels for thirteen years before receiving her Ph.D from the University of Florida in 1995. Her research interests include investigating how children learn mathematics, how they communicate about mathematics, and how teachers use this information in their teaching.

Dr. Ellen Hines
Project Co-Director
hines@math.niu.edu
Dr. Hines is an assistant professor of mathematics education at Northern Illinois University, Department of Mathematical Sciences. She has taught high school mathematics, and recently received her Ed.D in Curriculum and Instruction, secondary education, from Northern Illinois University. Her research interests include investigating the processes used by students to understand the symbols and procedures of mathematics, especially how middle and high school students develop meaning for symbolic variables to support their understanding of algebra.
