Dr. Diana Steele

Dr. Steele is an assistant professor of mathematics education at Northern Illinois University,
Department of Mathematical Sciences. She taught at the elementary and secondary levels for
thirteen years before receiving her Ph.D from the University of Florida in 1995. Her research
interests include investigating how children learn mathematics, how they communicate about
mathematics, and how teachers use this information in their teaching.
Dr. Ellen Hines

Dr. Hines is an assistant professor of mathematics education at Northern Illinois University,
Department of Mathematical Sciences. She has taught high school mathematics, and recently
received her Ed.D in Curriculum and Instruction, secondary education, from Northern Illinois
University. Her research interests include investigating the processes used by students to
understand the symbols and procedures of mathematics, especially how middle and high school
students develop meaning for symbolic variables to support their understanding of algebra.
Ms. Wanda Barlow

Ms. Barlow is a graduate student in mathematics education at Northern Illinois University. She
is an experienced teacher of mathematics at the secondary level.

interest in mathematics education. She is an experienced teacher of mathematics at the
early college level.
