Dr. Ellen Hines, Project Co-Director, hines@math.niu.edu
Dr. Hines is an assistant professor of mathematics education at Northern
Illinois University, Department of Mathematical Sciences. She has taught high
school mathematics, and recently received her doctorate in Curriculum and
Instruction, secondary education, from Northern Illinois University. Her
research interests include investigating the processes used by students to
understand the symbols and procedures of mathematics, especially how middle and
high school students develop meaning for symbolic variables to support their
understanding of algebra.
Dr. Helen Adi Khoury, Project Co-Director, hkhoury@math.niu.edu
Dr. Khoury is an associate professor of mathematics education at Northern
Illinois University, Department of Mathematical Sciences. She received her
doctorate in Mathematics Education from Florida State University in Tallahassee.
Her teaching experience extends from the middle school , the high school,
and through the university level. Her research interests focus on the
development of students' mathematical thinking, and on identifying the reasoning
strategies students use as they solve mathematical problems related to
fractions, ratios, proportions, and function concepts. She has directed and
participated in several standards-based in-service teacher enhancement programs
at the elementary and middle school levels.
Mr. Robert Hein, Support Staff, hein@math.niu.edu
Mr. Hein is a doctoral student in mathematics at Northern Illinois University
with interests in mathematics education. He is an experienced teacher of
mathematics at the early college level.
Ms. Amanda Mahmoud, Support Staff, mahmoud@math.niu.edu
Ms. Mahmoud is a graduate student pursuing a masters in mathematics with
an emphasis in mathematics education at Northern Illinois University.
