Typically only 2 or 3 problems in each assignment will be graded - the rest will be checked for completeness. Homework problems are mainly for your self-study. You can't do well on quizzes and exams unless you master most of the homework. Conversely, if you do put enough effort into the homework problems, you should have no trouble getting a good grade in the course.
A good strategy is to pick, for any assigned even-numbered problem, a very similar odd-numbered one and check your answer to that one in the back of the book. This sounds like doubling your homework - yes, but in this class you do have to spend about twice as much time working on your own as you spend sitting listening to me. So go do it. You won't regret it!
