Lesson Analysis                           Dr. Steele, Math 402        10 points

The goal for this assignment is for you to examine a lesson taken from a mathematics textbook in use where you are completing your clinical experience. You will compare this lesson to the expectations described in the NCTM Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. Begin by familiarizing yourself with the Standards for grades K-2 and 3-5.  See chapter one and Appendix A in the Van de Walle text.

To complete the assignment you will be expected to do the following:

First Steps

1.  Select a geometry, measurement, or algebraic thinking/reasoning lesson. Make a copy of this lesson. Read the lesson.

2.  Read the K-2 or 3-5 Standards (depending on the grade level where you are completing your clinical experience).  If you do not understand what each standard means you can find a narrative for each one in the book NCTM Principles and Standards for School Mathematics.  Note:  Copies of the NCTM Principles and Standards for School Mathematics can be found in the brown cabinet at the back of DU 306 or in the library. A copy can also be found on the web site nctm.org.

The Report

1.  Write a report to include the following:

a.  a brief one-paragraph summary of the lesson in which you identify the main topic and the objective(s) of the lesson. Describe the main activities in which students will be involved as they complete the lesson.

b.  a description of how the lesson meets the appropriate content standard (Algebra, Geometry,  Measurement) for the grade level. If the lesson does not meet the Standard explain how it could be adapted to do so. If no adaptations are needed, state this and explain why.

c.  a description of how the lesson meets each of the five process standards (Problem Solving, Reasoning and Proof, Communication, Connections, Representation)-a least one paragraph for each process standard. If the lesson does not meet one or more of the process standards, explain how it could be adapted to do so. If no adaptations are needed, state this and explain why.

d. an explanation of how the lesson could be adapted for one group of students with special needs (e.g., gifted, LD, physically disabled, limited English, visual or hearing impaired) while still meeting the appropriate Principles and Standards. In your explanation, include why adaptations are needed. If you think no adaptations are necessary, you need to explain your reasons.

2.  Type the report.  It should be typed (double-spaced) with 1-inch margins, 12-point font

throughout. The report should be 6 pages in length.

4.  Attach a copy of the lesson to your report.
