Targeted Algebra Review for Math 211/229

The pages accessible below contain brief descriptions of algebra skills whose mastery is crucial to success in Math 211 and Math 229 and problem sets designed to mimic the actual use the students will make of those skills in the course. Indeed, most of the problems are actually the algebra computations required in exercises taken directly from a first semester calculus textbook, so they give a very accurate indication of the level of mastery required for success in the course.

These pages by no means constitute a review of all the algebra that will be required of the Math 211/229 student. They are intended to give a ``heads up," alerting the student to specific skills he will need to use intensively. If a student is unable successfully (and fairly easily) to complete the problems on a given page, he should take it as an indication that he should review the targeted skills more intensively BEFORE reaching that point in his calculus course where the skills are required.

The NIU course Math 110 is intended precisely to address algebraic skills necessary for success in Math 211 and Math 229, so its textbook is a perfect source for review material. The current text is Sullivan's Algebra. It is a new edition, so you will not be able to find used copies. The chances are very good, however, that someone you know has a copy of Sullivan's Algebra & Trigonometry, Sixth Edition, which is the text that has been used for the last several semesters in Math 110, and will suit your purposes quite as well as the new edition. If you can buy a copy relatively cheaply, it would be a good idea to do so, and keep the book as a reference.
