I am surprised that noone has given a reference on this subject (though 
it is fascinating to reinvent the wheel sometimes).  The whole subject of 
statistics on a sphere is nicely reviewed in:

Fisher, N.L. et al, 1987, Statistical Analysis of Speherical Data. CUP

I believe that there may even be a recent second edition.
