Not quite. Qubic is indeed a brand-name for 4x4x4 tic-tac-toe. I think there was some difference in the rules, such as one type of line not being counted as win. (The "space diagonals", perhaps? Or maybe it was the lines that are diagonals in a vertical orthogonal plane?) The game you're thinking of where you drop beads onto dowels was called "Score Four", though there may be other versions with other names.
